Psychology, WTF? The Man Who Had Two Brains, Zero Teamwork Skills, And One Shirt Too Many

Some people wake up and meditate. Some people wake up and stretch. One patient woke up and began buttoning his shirt with one hand while the other hand unbuttoned it again. Because both halves of his brain were fighting like two drunk girls in the bathroom at 2 AM.

Congratulations. Science just proved that our internal chaos actually makes perfect sense.

Let us begin.

 

The Surgery That Created A Human Reality Show

Back in the mid twentieth century, epilepsy treatment was in its experimental era. These mysterious seizures spread across the whole brain like a fast gossip rumour, and doctors wanted it to stop.

The best solution they came up with was cutting the corpus callosum, the giant communication cable that lets the left and right hemispheres talk.

Translation for the girlies: scientists accidentally deleted the group chat inside a man’s head. Obviously, this was a man’s idea. They never quite understand the value of a well-run group chat.

Each hemisphere still worked perfectly, they just couldn’t communicate. And so, the patient became a walking group project with no project manager.

Researchers studied him.

Researchers regretted studying him.

Researchers also discovered something wild: your brain is not one, but two girlies trying to co parent your consciousness.

 

The Hemispheres of your brain: Bestie Edition

Let’s put this into terms we know about:

Sophie (Left Hemisphere)

The organised friend. Believes in logic. Believes in rules. Believes she is right at all times.

She handles language, planning, maths and excuses that sound almost convincing.

If Sophie doesn’t know something she will invent a reason and present it with the confidence of a man applying for a CEO role he is not qualified for.

 

Chloe (Right Hemisphere)

The emotional friend. Vibes only. Feels everything. Cannot express it clearly. Communicates through impulsive action.

She is your intuition, your dramatic instinct, your romantic chaos and your urge to buy skincare because an influencer said it smells like an expensive fruit.

 

These two halves of the brain now have to raise one child together.

Stunning.

Disastrous.

If you want the ultra-simple version: Your brain has two sides. They normally talk. When the connection is cut, they act like divorced parents trying to control the same child.

The child is confused and wants snacks.

That child is you.

 

Why Did Doctors Think Slicing Brains Like Fancy Cheese Was A Good Idea

Before we meet our split-brain kings, we deserve some background on this. Because yes, it sounds unhinged. Yes, it sounds like a plot twist from a medical drama. And yes, it actually happened in real life with real scalpels and real patients.

In the early 1900s epilepsy was basically a terrifying medical mystery. Thousands of people suffered yet it was wrapped in stigma, fear and guesswork.

Sure, doctors had theories. But none of them were good.

For patients, the reality was nightmarish.

A seizure could hit at any time, with no warning and no way to prevent it. We are talking about severe, brutal seizures, with no explanation or treatment.

People lived in constant fear, often isolated or institutionalised, believing they were unstable, cursed, possessed or “mad” because that is what society told them.

These patients had electrical storms in their brains that spread instantly from one hemisphere to the other, turning the entire brain into a malfunctioning rave.

When one half of the brain had a seizure, the other half joined in like
“Sure babe, I love chaos too.”

The result:
• full body convulsions
• injuries
• memory loss
• zero control
• constant risk of brain damage
• zero quality of life

These were not mild cases. These were people whose brains were practically rioting.

And that left doctors scrambling to make them stop.

Although, of course, in these days’ neuro-doctors were mostly men that thought they knew everything there was to know about the human brain and Freud was just some crazy guy doing his own thing over there, so why would they need to ask even one single psychologist what they reckon about their new treatment logic?

 

The Logic: If The Halves Can’t Talk, The Seizures Can’t Spread

So, at this point the doctors know that these seizures spread between the two halves of the brain, probably by this big cable, and for some reason, removing parts of the brain can sometimes help with seizures. Oh, and that animals had successfully survived having their corpus callosum cut.

Enter the theory:

If seizures spread across the corpus callosum between the two halves of the brain, then cutting that connection would trap the seizure in one hemisphere.

A half brain seizure is bad, but way less bad than a full brain one. Seemed worth a shot.

But this wasn’t just a random idea, it was seen as medical chess.

Doctors thought: If we separate the brain into two halves, the electrical chaos cannot jump from one side to the other. Which means the patient will still have seizures, but they will be smaller, less violent, less life threatening.

This was revolutionary.

In the 1940s a doctor with impulsivity issues said fuck it, pass me the scalpel. That doctor was William Van Wagenen. We have no idea who his first patient was, he didn’t bother to write that down anywhere.

 

The Goal: Save Lives, Not Create Psychological Chaos

Doctors did not do this to study consciousness. They didn’t expect the drama. And they definitely didn’t know they were about to create one of the most iconic psychological case studies of the last century.

They just wanted to reduce seizures. And to be fair, they did. The surgeries worked beautifully for that purpose.

But what they accidentally revealed was that the feeling of being one person is held together by communication between brain hemispheres.

Cut that line and you do not kill the brain, you expose its hidden internal cast. Yes, the producer of inside out did read about this just before he submitted that movie proposal. No connection though.

 

The First Red Flags

Of course, men didn’t immediately critically observe their own work, they thought that because the patient was alive and seizures were less, all good, job done.

So we didn’t notice the weird side effects of this treatment until the 1960s. When psychologists got involved and said “okay, good job on the life-saving thing, but what about how these patients experience life after that?”

Luckily, the surgery mostly disappeared for the 20 years because the scientists made some medication breakthroughs. And yes, it was quietly women that carried those breakthroughs. Somehow less surprising than men cutting up live brains with no real evidence.

Anyway.

The first patient that was studied and observed post-surgery is known only as W.J. and basically, his epilepsy was so bad that his doctor (Joseph Bogen) found this surgery in an old dusty playbook and thought it was worth a shot. After all, no one had ever reported negative outcomes.

The first red flag? That W.J. seemed totally normal. Too Normal.

Look, they knew that this surgery had no reported negative affects but they were still expecting some change, they literally just physically altered this guy’s. The surgeon had a bad gut feeling.

Then Dr Bogen started noticing tiny weird behaviours in the patient in the following days and weeks. It was as though his hands didn’t always agree with each other.

  • the left hand starting a task
  • the right hand finishing a different task
  • movements that didn’t quite line up
  • slight hesitations between actions
  • as if each hand had its own agenda

Then, while pressing further, Bogen realised the patient’s left hand could do things without him knowing why. This was the weirdest one.

The left hand (controlled by the right hemisphere) would: pick up an object, point at something, adjust placement of items, navigate space smoothly, meanwhile the speaking hemisphere (left side) had no idea why.

When asked “why did you do that?”, W. J. would give a vague or incorrect answer. And he wasn’t lying and wasn’t confusion.

Bogen was like:
“…mmmkay, I think we need to call a scientist. Now. Please”

And the perfect split brain researching neuroscientist was unknowingly awaiting his call. Enter Roger Sperry. (And his unpaid grad student that actually did everything, but who cares about him?)

This guy already knew what needed to be done. He sent the grad student to LA to start doing split visual field tests, stat.

And so:

  • They set up a mini-lab in the hospital room
  • They ran visual-field tests on day one (stat, I told you)
  • They realised each hemisphere was acting independently
  • They escalated into more and more complex tests
  • They effectively interviewed the two hemispheres as separate entities
  • They discovered dual consciousness
  • They studied W. J. for years
  • They created the entire field of cognitive neuroscience

 

The Greatest Hits Of Hemispheric Divorce

Decades of testing split-brain patients gave us some of the most unhinged, jaw-dropping, scientifically delicious moments in all of psychology.

  1. “I Didn’t See Anything”… While The Left Hand Grabs The Correct Object: Researchers flashed a word to the right hemisphere only. The speaking hemisphere said: “I saw nothing.” Meanwhile, theleft hand picked up the matching object immediately, like: “Speak for yourself, sweetheart.”

This was the moment science collectively gasped.

  1. Two Different Words = Two Different Behaviours: Give each hemisphere a different word “snow” on one side, “chicken” on the other. He drew asnow shovel with one hand and pointed to a chicken with the other.

Two perceptions. Two responses. One man.

  1. The Confabulation Circus: The right hemisphere does something deliberate. The left hemisphere has no idea why. So it invents a reason with full confidence. Left hand picks up a leaf. Left hemisphere says: “Oh, I must be planning to tidy the garden later.”

No babe, your other half saw the word leaf.

  1. The Hands That Low-Key Sabotaged Each Other: Over the years, researchers watched behaviours like:
  • one hand buttoning a shirt
  • the other hand unbuttoning it
  • one hand choosing an outfit
  • the other hand rejecting it
  • one hand reaching for food
  • the other pulling it away

It wasn’t dramatic tantrums.

It was quiet marital resentment between hemispheres.

  1. Drawing Two Different Shapes At The Same Time: Ask a normal person to draw a circle with one hand and a square with the other. They glitch. Split-brain patients? Effortless. Because each hemisphere was running its own little art studio.
  2. Different Hemispheres, Different Preferences: Researchers discovered that each hemisphere had its own likes and dislikes: different food, different clothes, different pictures, different emotional reactions.

Imagine your LEFT hand hating the outfit your RIGHT hand picked. That’s the level of internal divorce we’re dealing with.

  1. The Right Hemisphere Trying To “Talk” Using The Left Hand: The right hemisphere can’t speak, because it isn’t in charge of your use of speech. But she’ll find a way. She communicated through pointing, selecting objects, drawing answers, nudging items on the table. 

Charades champion.

  1. The Internal Tug-Of-War Moments: Sometimes the hemispheres tried to control the same action: one wanted left, one wanted right, the body hesitates like a buffering laptop. Just standing up to walk became a mini custody battle.
  2. Independent Attention Systems: Most people have one spotlight of attention. Split-brain patients had two. Researchers could show different images to each hemisphere, and both would process them separately and differently.

Two tabs open. Two browsers running. One very tired CPU.

  1. The Double-Truth Problem: Show each hemisphere a different picture
    and ask, “What did you see?” Left hemisphere answers one thing. Right hemisphere points at another. Both are correct. Both are real. Both are incompatible.

The brain: two girlies, two opinions, one big mouth.

Your brain does not need surgery to behave like this. It already does this every day.

  • Part of you wants to block him. Part of you wants to check if he viewed your story.
  • Part of you wants peace. Part of you wants entertainment.
  • Part of you wants closure. Part of you wants him to suffer from afar without knowing why.
  • You forget to eat. You spiral but in an aesthetic way.

If you ticked both, congratulations, you are alive. This is not immaturity. This is neuroscience wearing mascara.

 

Dear Diary, WTF Does This Mean For Our Everyday Chaos?

Here’s the reassurance the girlies come for.

All this split-brain drama wasn’t just a weird medical accident. It revealed something deeply comforting:

You were never meant to feel like a single, consistent, fully aligned person. That’s not how the brain works.

Your mind is not one elegant narrator. It is two girlies negotiating custody of your behaviour.

Which means:

  • being indecisive is normal
  • wanting two opposite things at once is normal
  • feeling something before you understand it is normal
  • reacting emotionally before you can explain it is normal
  • contradicting yourself is not dysfunction, it’s biology
  • logic and emotion fighting is just “the group chat is down again, babe”

Your left hemisphere (Sophie) is trying to keep it together with spreadsheets and delusion. Your right hemisphere (Chloe) is communicating through vibes, gut feelings and impulsive choices.

You aren’t chaotic. You are neuroscience wearing mascara. Pretty badass.

 

And if W. J. could button and unbutton the same shirt at the same time without knowing why, maybe stop expecting yourself to instantly choose between:

  • blocking him
  • stalking him
  • healing
  • checking if he viewed your story
  • peace
  • entertainment
  • closure
  • petty rage

Of course you’re torn. Your brain is literally built to argue with itself.

Stop expecting harmony.
Start expecting vibes.
